The logo of the Greek Presidency marks – in its own way – the new era of the European Union. An era ushered in by enlargement, a process in which the Union now almost corresponds to Europe’s natural borders and embraces 450,000,000 citizens. In this new era the European Union is larger, more complete and stronger. However, the values which the Union stands for and seeks to promote – such as peace, democracy,
participation, social development, economic prosperity and security – remain unchanged.
The logo of the Presidency was inspired by Greek history … a 4,500-year-old fresco discovered at Akrotiri on the island of Santorini, the distinct elements of which are expressive of both Greece and Europe.
The swallow, symbol of spring, of regeneration, of the new era, of hope for our
common future, expressing at the same time the demand for freedom in the movement of people and ideas, for peace everywhere, for optimism and dynamic growth in the context of the new horizons opening before us.
The stars of the European Union framing the swallow in flight, conveying the idea of a free, united and powerful Europe.
The colors of Greece, white and blue, in harmonious arrangement with the stars of the European Union, underlining the coexistence of the ‘Greek spirit’ and the ‘European vision’, whilst also indicating Greece’s central role in the European formation during the Greek Presidency.
The olive wreath, the ancient Greek kotinos, chosen as the logo for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, symbolising the ideals of peace, noble competition, athletics and conciliation among peoples.
