Simitis - Miller

Greece’s experience as an EU member was at the centre of talks in Warsaw between the President of the European Council, Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis and his Polish counterpart Leszek Miller, in view of the referendum in early June on Poland’s accession to the Union.

Simitis said Greece’s accession to the EU had helped the country speed up reforms and its modernisation, while noting that today “one-third of infrastructure investments are being funded by the EU”.

Underlining the importance of participating in a supranational organisation such as the EU, Simitis referred to the need for multilateral coordination in order to combat illegal immigration and tackle the problem of SARS.

Lastly, replying to a question on the stance to be adopted by the EU on Poland, in view of the fact that the country will be managing one of the administrative zones in Iraq, Simitis noted that “the countries that took part in the conflict, should take steps for peace in Iraq and prepare the conditions for the reconstruction of the country”. He stressed however that the UN should have the central role in the process of Iraq’s reconstruction, since the organisation could ensure peace in the wider region.
