The President of the European Council, Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis and Latvian Premier Einas Repse referred to the agenda of the Thessaloniki European Council following their meeting in Riga on Wednesday (7/5/03). Simitis noted that the Council would examine the draft European Constitution and the next steps, that is the timetable, of the Intergovernmental Conference.
Replying to a question on the future of EU-US relations, Simitis observed that “there have always been differences, which however we must overcome”. He emphasised in particular the perception cultivated by each side concerning the role which the other can play.
“The European countries will have to decide how they view the US and what priority they will attach to their relations with the United States,” Simitis said. While on the same issue, Repse said Latvia’s accession to the EU would not affect his country’s good relations with the US.
