Veria is the capital of the prefecture of Imathia, the area which was the centre of the ancient kingdom of Macedonia. The nearest archeological attraction, which lies well within a day-trip’s distance, is the first capital of the Macedonian kingdom, Aigai (near the modern town of Vergina), whose archeological treasures are among the finest in the world. One can still see the ancient theatre, the palace, the foundations of the houses, the cemetery, and the most important finding excavated as recently as 1977, the complex of the royal tombs. To the northwest of Veria lies one of the most scenic mountainous places in all of Greece, Vermio, which includes slopes suitable for skiing. Veria and the surrounding area are known for the traditional mountainous villages, fantastic food and wine, and great nature. Many Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches may be found in the town, as well as the ruins of the town walls, and beautiful mansions of the 18th and 19th century situated in the Jewish quarters of Berbouta.
